I'm thinking of the water balloon as a metaphor, but the visual thing makes it allegorious (that's so not a word).
I recently (today) determined that "buffer" and "bouncer" aren't the most accurate definitions of my job. I'm not here to "protect" anyone. As a matter of fact, working with social media is more like being a compass or a spotlight - something that can navigate through the vast digital landscape and help folks figure out what's up, what's down, what's wrong, what's right. Not when to run for cover.
